Outline of Movements in Art

In Week 5, you will design an art gallery specific to a movement of your choice. To prepare for this project, this week you will examine the five movements listed below. To research the movements that we have not yet discussed in class, you will need to look ahead in your textbook and/or search for sources in the Ashford University Library.

  • Renaissance
  • Baroque
  • Romanticism
  • Impressionism
  • Modernism

In your paper, outline the following information for each of the five movements:

  • Include the name and time period of the movement.
  • Describe the movement, including unique key characteristics.
  • Identify two works of art that incorporate the significant characteristics of the time period.
    • Include the following basic identifying information for each: artist name, title of work, year completed, medium (materials from which the artwork is made), size, and current location.

Your outline must be at least two pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages.

Use at least two scholarly sources to support your points. The ProQuest and JSTOR databases in the Ashford Online Library are helpful sources of information, as is the ART101 Museum and Images WebsitePreview the document document located in your classroom. From the library home page select Find Articles and More and then select Databases A – Z. From the list of letters, you will choose the “J” link for JSTOR or “P” for ProQuest. Deliverable Length:  4–6 pages

For this assignment, you will be conducting the usability test utilizing the usability questionnaire that you developed in Week 3. First, you will need to select 4–5 testers. Craft a Usability Test Instruction Guide that contains all of the tourist user interface prototype screens that you created in week 2. Also, include a disclaimer that the participants' identities and participation will not be shared with a third-party organization. Send it to the testers, via e-mail, along with the usability questionnaire. Please request that they return the questionnaire in 4–5 days so that you have time to tally the results before this assignment is due. Thank them for their participation. You may want to engage some of your classmates and your professor as potential testers as they understand the time constraint.

To tally the results, you will need to aggregate the following:

Compute the average for each of the usability questions in section 2 and present it in a results spreadsheet. Include a couple of analysis statements discussing the results. What changes will you make based on these results?

Compute the average for each of the function questions in section 3 and present them in the same results spreadsheet. Include a couple of analysis statements discussing the results. What changes will you make based on these results?

Evaluate the demographics to see if that had an impact on individual results.

Summarize the comments at the bottom of the usability questionnaire and discuss changes you will make to the prototype design based on this feedback.

Psychodynamic Theories

Psychodynamic theories of psychology emphasize the role of the unconscious mind and early childhood experiences in personality development. Despite the far-reaching influence of psychodynamic theories on the evolution and current state of psychology as a discipline, there were many initial criticisms about the relevance and validity of these theories. One criticism of early psychodynamic theories is that they fail to account for one’s free will in the relationship between early childhood experiences and subsequent behavior. Initial theories suggested that personality and existing behavior were directly and solely determined during childhood. Another criticism is what some perceived to be the lack of scientific rigor with which the theories were developed. For example, Freud’s theories were based on case studies of mostly middle class, white Victorian women. Therefore, critics argued that his theories could not be generalized or applied beyond this narrow population of patients. Another criticism of psychodynamic theories was that many of the related concepts and processes (e.g., the unconscious, ego, childhood memories, feelings of inferiority, symbolism, and interpretation of dreams) could not be objectively measured or easily replicated. This criticism gave rise to the emergence of behaviorism, which sought to establish psychology as a science through the objective and observable measures of external stimuli and behaviors.

Fortunately, researchers have attempted to address some of the criticisms of early psychodynamic theories by studying and testing the theories in a wide range of contexts. In this discussion, you will select a study involving one psychodynamic theory of interest to you and determine if and how the results supported the theory or contributed to its evolution.

To prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources on psychodynamic theories.
  • Select one psychodynamic theory (e.g., psychoanalytic, psychosocial development) that interests you the most.
  • Locate a research article that includes the psychodynamic theory you selected.
  • Reflect on what you learned last week about the research-theory cycle. Think about how the theory was incorporated in the study and whether or not the findings provide evidence in support of the theory.

Post a response to the following:

Identify the psychodynamic theory you chose and briefly describe the study that included the theory. Then, explain how the psychodynamic theory was incorporated in the study. Be sure to include whether the research supported the theory, further informed theory, or did not support the theory.

One of the more traditional assignments that students encounter in an Art History class is to go to a museum and/or gallery to observe an object(s) and write a paper that details its stylistic features.  The greater Miami area has very fine collections of Contemporary art, including the cluster of galleries in Wynwood, The Margulies Collection, the Rubell Family Collection in Wynwood, as well as The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami (MOCA NoMi), the Miami Art Museum (MAM),  and the Frost Art Museum on the University Park campus of Florida International University (FIU).  Any of these venues will serve as an effective means for selecting an object, whether a painting, sculpture, combine, installation, et al. Select an object, paying close attention to its stylistic features.  Describe it, and then compare/contrast it to pieces we have studied in class, whether in the PowerPoint lectures or in the textbook. ; When selecting objects to compare, be discerning.  That is, try to find objects that share more characteristics than not.  The aim of this assignment is for students to develop an eye for style and to locate the subtle differences that distinguish one technique or tendency from another. Organize the paper, which should be five (5) pages in length (excluding imagery), into an introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion.  The introduction may include some general information (e.g., historical, economic, cultural) about the object's specific time period, the technique utilized to create the object, etc.  More importantly, the introduction should include a thesis statement about the object's overall aesthetic.  Then organize the body in a logical, analytic fashion, and conclude the paper with some remarks about the significance of the object — that is, how it fits into a larger, contemporary art historical framework.  Remember, this is NOT a research paper; however, if you quote a source (e.g., a placard from the museum/gallery or web site), be sure to cite it.

Comparing Movements and Works of Art

Select two works of art, each from a different movement. Select movements that you have not previously addressed in your discussions.

In your paper,

  • Describe these two works of art by applying at least three questions art historians ask and four words art historians use.
  • Explain how iconographic, historical, political, philosophical, religious, and social factors of the movements are reflected in each work of art.
  • Include images of both works of art in an appendix at the end of your paper.

What is Art to Me?

Essay Prompt:

Throughout the semester we have seen that Art acts in response to and as a precursor to cultures, societies, and global issues. Art speaks to the identity of people. What kind of Art defines you? What kinds of contemporary themes are most relevant to you? Which artists do you find particularly engaging? Do they tell something about you, culture, or society? You will examine these questions in your final essay, “What is Art to Me?”

Guidelines:

•2-3 pages (Length is Without Included Images), 12 point font, double spaced.

•Works Cited page required for all sources and images. 

•MLA Format. 

Directions:

Choose two or more Artists. Find at least three examples of each artist’s work. This can include: pictures of artwork, videos, interviews, books and online articles accessed via library resources, exhibition catalogues, and other online resources. Be sure to cite these sources correctly. 

Depending on the artists and themes you choose to highlight. You may consider this paper to be more of an exhibition review. Review sources such as Glasstire.com or The New York Times for examples of an exhibition review. You may also use your textbook as a general guide or source. You may use information from your Form/Content paper and discussions. This essay could also be comparing artists or art. Whatever your choice, be creative in your responses and utilize resources for citations. 

You may wish to describe each artists work according to the following criteria:
