Assignment 1: Multiple Intelligences in Daily Life

For many years, IQ (intelligence quotient) was considered to be the indicator of intelligence. An IQ score is determined through standardized testing, often characterized by measures of a person’s verbal comprehension skills, working memory capacity, perceptual reasoning ability, and processing skills. IQ represents a narrow conceptualization of intelligence and is traditionally focused on skills related to academic success. Intelligence was once thought to be stable throughout one’s lifespan. In other words, no amount of education or studying could change your IQ score or capacity to learn. Fortunately, the research of psychologist Robert Sternberg and others indicated otherwise, confirming that intelligence can vary, can be developed over one’s lifetime, and extends beyond the traditional skills associated with IQ. In this week’s resources, you will consider Sternberg’s theory of successful intelligence and a theory from another well-known giant in the field of intelligence, Howard Gardner. Gardner identified seven distinct intelligences that offer a much broader and more realistic view of the concept, and account for individual differences and cultural context.

In this assignment, you will apply a theory of multiple intelligence to your own life by identifying the intelligences you use throughout the day, as well as which intelligences come easily to you and which could be developed further.

To prepare
  • Review this week’s Learning Resources on multiple intelligences.
  • Select a theory of multiple intelligences that interests you the most.
  • Track a 24-hour day in your life and, based on the theory you selected, identify which intelligences you applied throughout your day.
  • Think about the intelligences that come easily to you and those that could be developed further.
By Day 7

Submit a 1-to 2-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Briefly describe the theory of multiple intelligence you selected.
  • Using the theory you selected, describe the different intelligences you applied throughout your day.
  • Explain which areas of intelligence come naturally to you and which areas could be further developed and why. Be specific and support your conclusions with scholarly literature

Read the scenario and answer questions.

A middle-aged, homeless woman who was brought to the emergency room after suffering a massive intracranial hemorrhage. She was profoundly lethargic, possessed medication for schizophrenia, and showed signs of a previous stroke. The clinicians who evaluated her believed that medical interventions could preserve her life, but that it was very unlikely that she would recover much, if any, functional or communicative capacity. Faced with the decision of whether to operate or institute palliative care, the medical team tried in vain to locate family members. Members of the team believed surgical intervention was not in the best interest of the patient, but they decided to perform the procedure anyway because their knowledge of public opinion data (invoked as a proxy surrogate) suggested that most families of patients in similar clinical scenarios would choose medical intervention. After an emergency craniotomy was performed, the patient's son and daughter were located, and both reported that their mother would not have chosen to undergo the operation had she been able to express her wishes. The patient never regained consciousness and died five months later of complications.

Please answer the following questions. Each question must be a minimum of two paragraphs.  You should incorporate topics learned during the course such as, law, ethics, bioethics, liability, malpractice, consent and end of life issues.

  1. Discuss how surrogate decision-making differs from routine decision-making. Should physicians give equal weight to an individual's decisions for herself/himself compared to a surrogate's decisions for the individual? Give an example.”
  2. Explain how informed consent differs between patients with and without capacity. Describe how consent was obtained for this patient. Why?
  3. Discuss the role of advance directives in end of life planning.
  4. What role should the ethics committee play in this scenario?
  5. Discuss the clinicians’ duty, if any to the patient and or family. Was that duty breached? Describe.

Discussion 2: Cultural Aspects of Attachment

Psychologist John Bowlby coined the term attachment as it relates to child development. Attachment refers to the process in which an infant bonds with primary caregivers. Attachment was once thought to be heavily influenced by the provision of food; that is, it was assumed that an infant would form the strongest bond with the caregiver who supplied food. However, Bowlby suggested that the process of attachment was much more nuanced and complex. Another well-known theorist who studied attachment at the time was Mary Ainsworth. While there are differences between Bowlby’s and Ainsworth’s attachment theories, both theories attempt to explain how attachment occurs, classify different attachment styles, and assert that the strength of attachment with one’s primary caregivers has a profound effect on social, emotional, and cognitive development and relationships later in life. However, it is important to keep in mind that psychological concepts and phenomena, such as attachment, are culturally bound. What is considered to be normal in one culture may be considered to be atypical in another culture, and vice versa. In this discussion, you will explore the applicability of Bowlby’s and Ainsworth’s theories of attachment in the context of two different cultures.

To prepare for this Discussion
  • Review the articles found in the Learning Resources (and any additional articles you might have located in the Walden Library) related to attachment and consider the cross-cultural aspects of attachment.
  • Select two different cultures examined in the articles or in literature you have located in the Walden Library.
  • Think about how views on attachment are similar and different in these two cultures. Consider whether the differences in attachment have any bearing on an infant’s well-being in either culture.
By Day 4

Describe the two cultures you selected. Then, explain the similarities and differences in attachment in these two cultures. Include whether the differences might impact infants’ well-being in the two cultures and why or why not. Be specific.

Unit 1 Assignment: Defining Healthcare Settings and Integrated Delivery System.

Unit Outcomes addressed in this Assignment:

* Recognize legal and regulatory issues in healthcare

* Understand the basic uses of financial information in decision making.

* Identify the role of finance in health care organizations

Describe the current financial environment in healthcare and its influence on decision making.

We discussed an integrated delivery system and how it consists of a number of different types of healthcare organizations, such as hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes, owned and operated as a single entity. Although integrated delivery systems offer the opportunity to coordinate all aspects of patient care under a single “umbrella,” their complexity makes the overall management process much more difficult than in smaller organizations that focus on one type of service.

Utilizing the textbook Chapters 1 and 2 from Gapenski, L. C. (2012). Healthcare finance: An introduction to accounting and financial management. Chicago, Ill:

a. Briefly describe the following healthcare settings:

· Hospitals

· Ambulatory care

· Home health care

· Long-term care

· Integrated delivery systems

b. What benefits are attributed to integrated delivery systems?

c. What are the challenges/drawbacks to implementing integrated delivery systems?

Requirements

* Responses to the questions should be written in a clear, detailed manner and observe the conventions of Standard English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.).

* Follow APA formatting for the title and reference page, as well as APA formatting within the paper itself (Times New Roman 12-point font and properly double spaced).

* The minimum page limit is 3 pages or 1000 words.

* Information should be summarized in your own words with appropriate APA formatting and citation style of in-text citations in the body of the text to acknowledge the source(s) of information.

* Include at least one reference. The course textbook may count towards the reference requirement for this Assignment. All references will follow APA format.

* Follow the conventions of Standard English (correct grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc.).

Just the essay part.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THE PLACES ARE IN OMAHA NEBRASK, USA.

We know that language influences our thoughts, truths, and realities, but the reverse is also true—our thoughts, truths, and realities influence how our language develops and changes.  Because more women are working outside the home than fifty years ago, children’s books written today inevitably account for this in the stories they tell.  Thus, social and cultural reality (that women work outside the home) affects the language used in children’s books (and possibly the way girls will be encultured in the future).

Further, existing categories in language affect our thoughts, realities, and truths.  Because the English language contains separate terms for the pronouns ‘he,’ ‘she,’ and ‘it,’ we believe that it’s an important distinction to make in when referring to a person (or inanimate object).  Interestingly, the Lakota only designate one term for all three of these pronouns: hé.  Lakota speakers must rely on the context of the sentence to know whether the speaker is referring to a woman, man, animal, or inanimate object.

This assignment involves several parts:

1)    Perform your own fieldwork in at two public locations (or on two different occasions in the same public place), assessing gender specific behavior, language, and nonverbal communication.

2)    Your group will then give a fifteen minuteclass presentation over these observational findings as they relate to the course reading and film materials.  A detailed grading rubric for this presentation is provided at the end of this document.

3)    After your presentation, your group must hand in an accompanying essay (7-10 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 1” margins), with copies of your field notes. A detailed grading rubric for this presentation is provided at the end of this document.

4)    Finally, your group members will also assess the value of your contributions to the group’s preparation, collaboration, presentation, and finishing (please see the attached peer review evaluation form at the top of this page).

On two different paragraphs give your opinion to Ryan Stuck and Mercedes Whitted

Ryan Stuck

Direct costs are costs directly tied to a product or service that a company produces. Direct costs can be traced to their cost objects. Cost objects can include goods, services, departments, or projects. Variable costs are costs that vary as production of a product or service increases or decreases. Unlike direct costs, variable costs depend on the company’s production volume. When a company’s production output level increases, variable costs increase. With variable costs, the total cost associated with the cost object changes as the production level changes.

As a healthcare manager, it would be important to consider your census. This would be a variable cost. You do not need as many supplies such dietary supplies if you are feeding fewer people due to census being down. This would also go along with healthcare supplies and staffing budgets. A direct cost would be you still a chef no matter how many people are eating this would not be a variable.

Mercedes Whitted

Direct cost-is the complete price for a good or service (Kenton, 2003). Variable cost-is a corporate expense that change based in production output (Kenton, 2003). As a healthcare manager it is important to have a list of all the direct cost items and a list of the all the variable cost items. On a monthly base it is a good idea to check the cost of all the items on the variable cost list to verify if the monthly budget can cover the expense.
