Original work

Many weeks in this course follow a similar pattern. You begin the week by studying a statistical test. Next, you complete Assignment 1, applying that test using datasets that are provided in the context of a research question that you pose. As you master the skills related to the test, including how to run the test in SPSS, you engage with your peers in the Collaboration Lab. The final activity in most weeks, including this week, is an Article Critique, in which you search the Walden Library for research that applies the test you studied that week.

The practice of quantitative research not only involves statistical calculations and formulas but also involves the understanding of statistical techniques related to real-world applications. You might not become a quantitative researcher nor use statistical methods in your profession but as a consumer, citizen, and scholar-practitioner, it will be important for you to become a critical consumer of research, which will empower you to read, interpret, and evaluate the strength of claims made in scholarly material and daily news.

For this Assignment, you will critically evaluate a scholarly article related to moderation.

To prepare

  • Review the Article Critique Assignment Guide in the Walden Library, listed in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Search the Walden Library for a quantitative article that applies moderation testing.

The Assignment

Write a 2 page critique of the research you found in the Walden Library that includes responses to the following prompts:

  • Why did the authors use moderation in their multiple regression model?
  • Do you think moderation is the most appropriate choice? Why or why not?
  • Did the authors display the results in a figure or table?
  • Does the results table stand alone? In other words, are you able to interpret the study from it? Why or why not?

During recent meetings with your sexual assault survivor group, you have noticed some potentially counter-productive behaviors from some of the members. One member always wants to sit next to you. When you speak, she nods her head and, at times, she repeats your very words. Two members always sit together and have side conversations. You have not said anything yet to them, but you feel it is distracting to the others. When you ask them to participate, they both provide little input and often just shrug their shoulders. One member talks at length during every session, forcing you to interrupt her by asking others to contribute to the discussion. You need to set boundaries with this person or she will continue to dominate the entire session.

Behaviors in group settings often are manifestations of the roles members play based on their personality. While groups have many benefits for clients, including validation, support, comfort, and education, they also can highlight some personalities and behaviors that might be challenging for you to manage as the group leader. How might you respond to these behaviors and roles? How might you redirect these behaviors and reposition the member roles for the benefit of the group?

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Search the Walden Library for an article dealing with group roles in social work practice. Then, consider the group member role that might be most challenging to you as a group leader and why. Finally, think about skills you might use for overcoming the challenges that member role presents.

Post a 300 word description of the group member role that might be most challenging to you as a group leader and explain why. Then, explain a skill you might use for overcoming that challenge.

Support your posts and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Sigmund Freud is often hailed as the father of psychoanalytical theory. His theory was the first to point to the influence of early childhood experiences. However, psychoanalytical theory has received a lot of criticism. Although theories are supposed to be objective and value-free, they are developed within a sociocultural and political context. For example, with historical perspective, it is possible to see that values within the Western Victorian era influenced Freud as he developed his theory. Another criticism is that many psychoanalytical concepts cannot be measured. For example, how do you measure the id, ego, and superego or the notion of unconscious conflicts? As a result, it is difficult to test the accuracy of these concepts using social science research methods.

It is important to critically evaluate theories for their practical use. For example, is it appropriate to use a theory when working with diverse populations or with populations different from those with whom the theory was normed (e.g., women, racial and ethnic minority groups, those who are economically disadvantaged)? Finally, are the assumptions of theories consistent with the values underlying the field? In this Discussion, you respond to some of these concerns.

To prepare, read the following from the Learning Resources:

  • Auld, F., Hyman, M., & Rudzinski, D. (2005). How is therapy with women different? In Resolution and inner conflict: An introduction to psychoanalytic therapy (pp. 217–236). Washington DC: American Psychological Association.
  • National Association of Social Workers. (2008). Code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers. Retrieved from https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English
  • https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English

Post:

  • Summarize the assumptions of Freud’s psychoanalytical theory in 2 to 3 sentences.
  • Explain whether you believe it is appropriate to apply psychoanalytic theory to women and individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups.
  • Explain whether you believe psychoanalytic theory is consistent with social work values and social work ethics.

Around nine in the morning on April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, an 8-story building in Savar, Bangladesh, collapsed catastrophically in a hail of twisted concrete, steel, and sewing machinery. At the time, more than three thousand garment workers were on duty in five separate factories, located on the building’s third to eighth floors. 1,134 workers, most of them young women, were killed, and more than 2,500 others were injured, many seriously. It was the worst industrial disaster in the history of the garment industry. Several dozen U.S. and European retailers and brands—including Walmart, Benetton, H&M, the Gap, Inditex, and Loblaw—were at the time or had recently sourced products from one of the Rana Plaza garment factories. In the wake of the collapse, these companies and others that had contracted production to suppliers in the low-wage, fast-growing, and notoriously unsafe Bangladeshi garment industry faced an urgent challenge: What should they do now, after Rana Plaza? This case enables students to explore the causes of and responsibility for the collapse of Rana Plaza and to evaluate various courses of action for Western apparel companies doing business in Bangladesh.

  1. Who was responsible for the      collapse of Rana Plaza, and why do you think so? In your answer, please      address the responsibility, if any, of the building owner, factory owners,      Bangladeshi government, U.S. and European governments, Bangladeshi workers      and their advocates, clothing customers, and apparel retailers and brands      in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

  1. What could be taken now to      reduce the chances of a similar tragedy occurring in the future? In your answer, please consider what      actions, if any, the various individuals and groups mentioned in Question      1 could take.

  1. Of the various options you mentioned in response to      Question 2, which do you think is most likely to be effective, and why?

According to the Council on Social Work Education, Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice:

Social workers understand that human rights and social justice, as well as social welfare and services, are mediated by policy and its implementation at the federal, state, and local levels. Social workers understand the history and current structures of social policies and services, the role of policy in service delivery, and the role of practice in policy development. Social workers understand their role in policy development and implementation within their practice settings at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels and they actively engage in policy practice to effect change within those settings. Social workers recognize and understand the historical, social, cultural, economic, organizational, environmental, and global influences that affect social policy. They are also knowledgeable about policy formulation, analysis, implementation, and evaluation. Social workers:

  • Identify social policy at the local, state, and federal level that impacts well-being, service delivery, and access to social services;
  • Assess how social welfare and economic policies impact the delivery of and access to social services;
  • Apply critical thinking to analyze, formulate, and advocate for policies that advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice.

This assignment is intended to help students demonstrate the behavioral components of this competency in their field education.

To prepare: Working with your field instructor, identify, evaluate, and discuss policies established by the local, state, and federal government (within the last five years) that affect the day to day operations of the field placement agency (Georgia Department of Family and Children Services).

The Assignment (1-2 pages):

  • Describe the policies and their impact on the field agency.
  • Propose specific recommendations regarding how you, as a social work intern, and the agency can advocate for policies pertaining to advancing social justice for the agency and the clients it serves.

To what extent are various public health goods public or private? Why is it important for you, given your current or future professional role, to understand this distinction on how various public health goods and services are delivered?

In Canada, public health services are free to the public. These services are available for anyone who wants or needs them. The public good of health is consumed by the citizen. In the United States, the vast majority of public health services are paid for by consumers through employee group plans or by the individual. This is a private good that falls on the shoulders of citizens. Review the examples of public and private goods. Consider how you would determine which is a public or a private good.

  • Pertussis vaccine    SELECT 1
  • Human papillomavirus vaccine
  • Information about the prevention of pregnancy geared toward those younger than age 18 years
  • Medical care for a 35-year-old woman who has been diagnosed with cancer; she has two children and is homeless
  • Electronic health record
  • Nutritional advising for parents of young children
  • End-of-life or palliative care for an elderly person with dementia
  • Mental health care for a group of former U.S. military personnel injured in battle
  • Safe labeling of pharmaceuticals
  • The Da Vinci robot (surgery medical technology)
  • In-patient treatment for heroin addiction

Select one item from above, and determine whether it should be a public or private good. Think about the influence of this public or private good on public consumption.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a description of the good you selected. Then explain whether you would deem the good to be public or private, and why. Finally, explain what economic impact this determination may have

Discussion 1: Reflecting on Bias

Researcher bias is a critical concern for the field of qualitative research. Qualitative researchers may allow their subjective view(s) to cloud or distort an accurate response from an interviewee or to inadvertently drive a participant to a predetermined conclusion, thus negatively impacting the findings. Therefore, it is critical for qualitative researchers to understand, identify, and address any biases they might have regarding the topic of investigation. It would be impossible to remove all bias because you are a human being. Rather, one mitigates bias as best as one can. Mitigating bias can be demonstrated via using an interview protocol, member checking, data saturation, and other strategies to limit the use of one personal lens during the data collection process of your study.

To prepare for this Discussion, consider what you have read about bias, as well as your experiences as an independent scholar and doctoral researcher thus far. Reflect on any preconceived biases you might have that would impact your ability to remain objective.

By Day 3

Post an evaluation of ethical considerations for independent scholars within the doctoral research process. In your evaluation, do the following:

· Briefly describe your problem statement and the topic you have chosen for your individual Doctoral Study.

· Analyze any potential biases, assumptions, and attitudes that may impact your Doctoral Study, including how you identified these issues.

· Explain potential strategies for addressing and limiting the negative impact of your own biases, assumptions, and attitudes on your study. Be sure to provide scholarly examples to support your explanation.

Be sure to support your work with a minimum of two specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and one or more additional scholarly sources.

Refer to the Week 8 Discussion 1 Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work.

Unit IV Assignment

Handbook.

You have just been hired as the emergency manager in your community. You are looking through documents and materials left by your predecessor regarding disaster response and recovery, and you realize that there is no information regarding how to help strengthen community and family resilience after the occurrence of a disaster event. You realize that having support mechanisms in place that can help people cope with traumatic losses before a disaster event strikes is one of the keys to improving and strengthening your community's response and recovery efforts after a disaster occurs.

For this assignment, you will develop a handbook for your emergency management staff that discusses the steps that should be taken after a large-scale disaster to strengthen community and family resilience in coping with the traumatic losses that they are likely to have experienced.

Your handbook should consist of at least three pages and should include information on services that will be provided to your community's citizens after the disaster, groups that the staff can call in to aid in disaster relief, and other actions that the staff can take to help individuals and groups cope and begin the response and recovery efforts.

Please remember to use your own words in this assignment; cutting and pasting from source material is not permitted.

Journal

As an emergency manager, what kind of advice would you offer your staff to help them cope with the stress that they will likely experience when dealing with families who have lost loved ones after a major disaster? What would you do to handle your stress?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.
