Consider this scenario:

You receive a hotline call at your mental health agency from a client requesting a same-day appointment. You are the only social worker available to work with clients at the time, as your coworker is out of town on vacation for 10 days. A 15-year-old boy struggling with depression (no suicidal ideation) and addiction calls asking for help. While you are gathering information over the phone, you realize that he happens to be the son of a friend. In certain geographical areas there may be limited resources and in turn a lack of opportunities for clients to obtain assistance. In some rural or otherwise isolated areas there might be situations that make it difficult to maintain ideal boundaries due to dual-role relationships. Dual-role relationships exist when a professional fills multiple roles at the same time, a situation that may be unavoidable in certain circumstances.

Understanding the significant impact of a dual-role relationship with a client is important in order to avoid harming the client. Further, recognizing the impact on the client and the relationship will assist in the creation of strong professional boundaries. In these situations, a social worker might feel his or her ability to maintain these boundaries is compromised or may even experience a value dilemma due to the existence of dual-role relationships.

Consider the importance of boundaries in a therapeutic relationship. Think about ways a social worker might violate the NASW Code of Ethics as it pertains to dual-role relationships. Is there ever a situation in which dual-role relationships are acceptable, or even preferable?

People often use advocacy to create positive change for society. Advocacy represents the strategies devised, actions taken, and solutions proposed to influence change for the betterment of society. A needs assessment is a systematic way of determining the gap between what an agency, organization, or community has and what is desired to meet the needs of individuals, groups, communities, or societies. Before a Crisis

The American Red Cross, along with the Salvation Army and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are the first national-level responders to many disasters in the United States and, depending on the scope of the disaster, sometimes abroad. Many professional associations coordinate with the American Red Cross, including the American Counseling Association, the National Board of Certified Counselors, and other national, state, and regional professional associations. Additionally, local first responders, fire fighters, police officers, and medics contribute to response efforts. Planning for crisis events is the first step in any response to a crisis. A Personal Creed is similar to a Personal Mission Statement or a Personal Audit, so keep it short, concise, and clear, no longer than one page. But you must show how you arrived at the creed by defining terms and citing significant personal experiences and/or people (e.g., family, friends, teachers, coaches). Your creed reflects your underlying values. So, where do these come from? You should do this before you write your creed. 

Which values or virtues are important to you? Why? Make a list. Then make a list of the people and events that have been important in your life. Why? What have been the negative experiences in your life? What have you learned from them? 

The creed is a statement that reflects who and what you are as well as where you want to go. It is your narrative. You also may think of it in terms of the Purpose of You (as opposed to the Purpose of Business or the Purpose of Government). 

Your creed is something to reflect on every day and should be your guide in everyday actions and decision-making. In this sense, it is lived out with others in community. So, ask yourself how does my creed and who I am affect others? How do others affect me? What needs to change in my life? What can I change? 

The Personal Creed forms the basis of a Professional Creed or Mission Statement, which, in turn, fits into the organizational Mission Statement. How well aligned are your Personal Creed with your organization’s mission, whether you are an intern or full-time employee? What accounts for the degree of difference? 

Note that the creed is not an action plan for career goals or self “branding.” It is a statement of who you are not as an employee, professional, or commodity but as a human being. The human being is the locus of ethical decision making in business and life in general.
