Unit 6: Tests of Significance Discussion

Please complete the following steps for your first discussion post and response.

Watch the video, Tests of Significance (Tests of Significance, 2013).

In the video, you observed the value of statistics in determining the authorship of a newly discovered poem.  Consider the video and review your course readings on statistical significance, and then select a situation in your life or career where statistics could be used to answer questions. Examples could include authorship, quality of products, or health issues. After making a selection:

  • Describe the situation and the question(s) you would hope to answer using statistical tests.
  • Write a null hypothesis for your question(s).
  • Assume you conducted your statistical tests and were able to reject the null hypothesis.  How would you interpret the results?
  • Discuss whether statistical significance would mean you should change the way you approach your situation. (For example, if a new drug on the market lowered blood pressure by 2 percent and this difference was found statistically significant, would it be worth using the new drug?)

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format. Estimated time to complete: 2 hours. This topic is valued at 40 points. Please review post and response expectations. Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets criteria (Read me First Section of the Course). Cite any resources/references in APA formatting that were used in the discussion-if applicable.

InstructionsYou are  currently working at NCLEX Memorial Hospital in the Infectious Diseases Unit. Over the past few days, you have noticed an increase in patients admitted with a particular infectious disease. You believe that the ages of these patients play a critical role in the method used to treat the patients. You decide to speak to your manager, and together you work to use statistical analysis to look more closely at the ages of these patients. You do some research and put together a spreadsheet of the data that contains the following information: Client number Infection disease status Age of the patient You are to put together a PowerPoint presentation that explains the analysis of your findings which you will submit to your manager. The presentation should contain all components of your  findings. For review, the components of the report should include:Brief overview of the scenario and variables in the data set Discussion, calculation, and interpretation of the mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, and variance Discussion, construction, and interpretation of the 95% confidence interval Explanation of the full hypothesis test Conclusion The  calculations should be performed in your spreadsheet that you will also submit  to your manager. You can find additional information on what to add to your PowerPoint  presentation in this Word document. Use the  questions in the worksheet as your guide for the contents of your presentation. For your final deliverable, submit your PowerPoint presentation and the Excel  workbook showing your work. Do not submit your Word document.

Competency

Given a real-life application, develop a hypothesis test for a population parameter and its interpretation.

Instructions

Scenario (information repeated for deliverable 01, 03, and 04)

A major client of your company is interested in the salary distributions of jobs in the state of Minnesota that range from $30,000 to $200,000 per year. As a Business Analyst, your boss asks you to research and analyze the salary distributions. You are given a spreadsheet that contains the following information:

  • A listing of the jobs by title
  • The salary (in dollars) for each job

In prior engagements, you have already explained to your client about the basic statistics and discussed the importance of constructing confidence intervals for the population mean. Your client says that he remembers a little bit about hypothesis testing, but he is a little fuzzy. He asks you to give him the full explanation of all steps in a hypothesis testing and wants your conclusion about a claim that the average salary for all jobs in the state of Minnesota is less than $75,000.

Background information on the Data

The data set in the spreadsheet consists of 364 records that you will be analyzing from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The data set contains a listing of several jobs titles with yearly salaries ranging from approximately $30,000 to $200,000 for the state of Minnesota.

What to Submit

Your boss wants you to submit the spreadsheet with the completed calculations. Your research and analysis should be present within the answers provided on the worksheet.

Suppose that the demand for a company’s product in weeks 1, 2, and 3 are each normally distributed and the mean demand during each of these three weeks is 50, 45, and 65, respectively. Suppose the standard deviation of the demand during each of these three weeks is known to be 10, 5, and 15, respectively. It turns out that if we can assume that these three demands are probabilistically independent then the total demand for the three week period is also normally distributed. And, the mean demand for the entire three week period is the sum of the individual means. Likewise, the variance of the demand for the entire three week period is the sum of the individual weekly variances. But be careful! The standard deviation of the demand for the entire 3 week period is not the sum of the individual standard deviations. Square roots don’t work that way!

Now, suppose that the company currently has 180 units in stock, and it will not be receiving any further shipments from its supplier for at least 3 weeks. What is the probability that the company will run out of units?

Please keep in mind that my evaluation of your post will be based on the extent to which you participated and fostered a positive and effective learning environment–for yourself and others.  Participating and sharing are the keys.  Naturally, simply copying another person's post is prohibited.

APA formatting should be used throughout (cover page, running header, major heading, subheadings, in-text citations, and reference list). Any time you paraphrase or directly quote a source, in-text citations should be used.  A full APA-formatted reference should be included at the end of the assignment. Academically, no more that 20% of the essay should be quoted. At least 80% should be in your own words.

INSTRUCTIONS:  Make sure to follow the directions in order.

  1. First, provide a definition of the terms: "conceptual definition" and "operational definition".
  2. Next, conceptualize and operationalize the variable “race.”
  3. Read the Census Bureau’s report on race at: https://www.census.gov/content/dam/Census/library/publications/2011/dec/c2010br-02.pdf.
  4. Answer the following questions after reading the report:
    1. What changes did the Bureau make to the conceptualization and operationalization of race in the 2000 census?
    2. Why did the Bureau make these changes?
    3. Could the difference in operationalization produce different conclusions about race?
    4. Does the Bureau’s conceptualization and operationalization of race coincide with yours?  If so, how?  If not, what is different

its not as long as it seems. it really can be accomplished in 600 words. when answering in the essay please include the question.

PLEASE NO PLAGERISM. I ALMOST GOT KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL FOR ACCEPTING SOMEONES WORK FROM THIS SITE.

Review for important Steps in Hypothesis Tests.

1. Set up Ho and Ha, where Ha is usually the research hypothesis.

2. Choose an a, called significance level, which is customarily set as 5%.

a=5% means that you allow yourself up to 5% of chance of making a wrong decision by rejecting Ho.

3. Calculate test statistics. This step can be done by SPSS or other software.

4. Find P-value of your Test.

You may need to adjust the figure from the output if it is done by SPSS.

P-value is the sampling chance of making a wrong decision by rejecting Ho.

5. Make a decision. Universal Decision Rule for hypothesis tests:

If P < a, reject Ho. If P > a, fail to reject Ho.

6. Interpret your conclusion.

Rejecting Ho means you can conclude that the research hypothesis is true.

Fail to reject Ho means we don’t have enough evidence to prove that Ha is true

1) Find a (or multiple) data set online

2) Form your research questions

3) Using statistical software to analyze the data and answer your research questions.

4) Need to do all five type of problems, namely, Chi-square; independent-samples t test; paired-samples t; ANOVA and Regression. (All except t tests have to have a small p-value.)

5) Summarize each problem by mention the link of online data, list all important part of the procedure used and include outputs as attachment or insert it into the report. datalink you can use http://www.stat.ufl.edu/~winner/datasets.html

You can use the MLA style BUT I would prefer you use the APA Publications Manual as you guide.  Use peer reviewed journals whenever possible and U.S. Government sites that can be found through the Fed world online index.  Do a professional job.

I want you to look at migration patterns and numbers coming into the U.S. or what would become the U.S. since the European colonization began in the 15th century and follow it all the way up to today.  Start with European colonization time frame even though recent discoveries have found that the ancient civilizations such as the Minoan’s and others may have been here thousands of years ago.  How have the migration numbers and patterns changed over time?  Examine the numbers of people and where they came from and for what reasons they came here, making sure to look at what proportion of the population they represented at the time of migration.  During the 89th Congress President Lyndon Johnson was able to get a bill through Congress and sign it into law that led to a major reform in immigration law and greatly changed the immigration pattern. Consider all of the influences on migration over time, why things changed, how they changed and how it all led up to where we are today.
