Read the selections from J.S. Mill’s On Liberty (Ch.1 & 2) and write a 1-2 pg. response (typed, double-spaced, 12-pt. font). Do you agree with Mill’s harm principle? “That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others” (pg. 158) What does Mill means by “harm”? What does he not mean? Can speech ever be “harmful” according to Mill? Are there any other forms of harm Mill may have overlooked?
