Instructions

For your final paper, select a Children’s or Adolescent (YA) Literature text that utilizes some sort of visual element (e.g., a picturebook, graphic novel, illustrated novel, transmedial text, multimodal novel, board book, etc.).

Justify the use of the selected text for a range of classroom purposes by:

  1. Critiquing the following components:
    1. Format
      • What format is the text? Use evidence to support your claim.
      • Is this a good example of this format? Why or why not? Use evidence to support your claim.
    2. Genre
      • What genre and/or subgenre/blended genre is the text? Use evidence to support your claim.
      • Is this a good example of this genre and/or subgenre/blended genre? Why or why not? Use evidence to support your claim.
    3. Literary Quality
      • Is this text an example of a well-written book or good quality literature? Why or why not? Use evidence to support your claim.
      • What literary elements contribute to or detract from the quality of the text? Use evidence to support your claim.
    4. Visual Literacy
      • Is this text an example of a well-illustrated book or good visual quality literature? Why or why not? Use evidence to support your claim.
      • What visual elements contribute to or detract from the quality of the text? Use evidence to support your claim.
    5. Diversity, Inclusion, & Censorship
      • What social/emotional considerations does the text present? What might make the text a poor match for the students in your current or future classroom? Use examples from the text.
      • What else needs to be considered about this text? Use evidence to support your claims.
        • Is it a quality diverse and/or inclusive text?
        • How does it represent individuals or groups of people?
        • Is it a banned or challenged book?
  2. Identifying and discussing pedagogical/instructional strategies for reading and literature instruction:
    1. Based on your analysis, how could you use this text in your classroom? Why?
    2. What role(s) could the text play in the classroom? Why?
    3. What instructional/pedagogical strategies might you use to teach with this text? Why?

Guidelines

The paper should be approximately 5-6 pages in length, apply appropriate academic conventions of writing, utilize evidence to support claims, cite relevant sources, and be formatted according to an academic style (e.g., MLA, APA, Chicago Style, etc.).
