Final Essay Primary Prompt: Is society today stuck in the ancient patterns of civilization? Have humans so internalized these patterns as natural that we refuse or resist change?

Essay Length: A minimum of seven to eight pages or 1700 to 2000 words—write to answer the questions and learn from what was studied. However, an “A” paper from my perspective includes everything that was read, discussed, or viewed in class. No more than 5 to 9 quotes. However, if your essay is more than seven pages feel free to include one or more quotes. Make sure you summarize or contextualize, in a brief sentence or two, each source that you are citing. Minus 100 points for every source not cited. If you cite from the same source more than once, you only need to summarize that source one time. Also, make sure you explain exactly how this quote relates to your topic of discussion—do not assume it is obvious. Support your perspective/position with concrete examples from the course texts, films, primary documents, lectures or additional research. Please erase all of the highlighted text before submitting your essay. Minus 200 points if it remains.

Works Cited and Bibliography Page: A useful resource is the Modern Language Association (MLA) website. However, if you are a History Major, you should use the Chicago-Style of citation. Please erase the prior line. Minus 50 points for every line not erased. General Helpful Information: • Overall pointers: o Make sure you follow instructions o Comprehension is key o Clarity is key o Define key terms o Does your support actually address your claim or position? o Utilization of resources: the texts, lectures, films, primary and secondary resources and research (An “A” paper should include at least 5 of the above) o No sweeping generalizations or absolutes—allow for complexity, unless certain it applies to everyone or in all situations o Pay attention to details—details matter o Be specific o Spelling and Grammar count—I read the first 2 pages and if there are more than 7 spelling or grammatical errors, I stop reading and your essay will receive half points or less. More than seven spelling or grammatical errors in the first two pages is not college level work. o Edit your paper o Have someone else read your paper o Have Fun Thinking, Writing, Editing, and Re-writing! o Please erase all of the highlighted area before submitting your essay—thank you! Minus 200 points if this section remains. o Ruberic for Final is on the next page
